About the museum
The neoclassical building of the Almyros Museum is perhaps the only archaeological museum in Greece founded on the initiative of local social groups. The Philarchaic Society “Othrys”, founded in 1896 by scientists, scholars and wealthy citizens of the area, with Nikolaos Giannopoulos as its driving force, aimed to collect antiquities, manuscripts and books to document the history of the region and of Thessaly.
In 1910 the municipality of Almyros donated two plots of land to the society for the construction of the museum. Work was interrupted in 1915–1923, and the building was completed in 1930. The Second World War and the earthquakes of 1955 and 1956 caused damage, and in 1960 the society handed the museum over to the state. After seismic reinforcement and restoration of the building, the present exhibition was completed in May 1998, and the museum has been open to the public ever since.
Today three exhibition halls display finds from ancient Achaea Phthiotis, the Phthiotic Thebes and Alos, from the Neolithic to the Archaic period. The area of Almyros is linked with the myths of Athamas, Phrixus and Helle, as well as of Achilles and the Myrmidons.
