About the museum
The Historical Collection of Kastellorizo is housed in the island’s Ottoman mosque, built in 1755/56 and also known as the Tzami tou Kavou. The exhibition seeks to highlight the bygone prosperity of Kastellorizo, when the island was a major naval power with a population of more than 10,000 inhabitants, without altering the building’s remarkable architectural features.
Visitors see local traditional costumes, embroidered pieces and household utensils, exhibits that document life on the island from the 19th century to 1943. Of particular interest are the dome, the gallery and the women’s gallery of the mosque itself.
