About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is housed in the medieval building of the Hospital of the Knights, one of the most impressive structures of the Medieval City. Its construction began in 1440 under Grand Master Jean de Lastic and was completed in 1489 under Pierre d'Aubusson. It is a building in the Gothic style with Renaissance elements, with a pointed entrance, an inner courtyard and a two-storey arcade around which the rooms open.
The first exhibition was organised in 1914 by the Italian Archaeological Mission and included prehistoric and Mycenaean objects, vessels, sculptures, inscriptions, coins, Byzantine and medieval finds and an ethnographic collection. After the Second World War extensive repairs were carried out in the parts of the building that had been bombed, and after the incorporation of the Dodecanese into the Greek state the exhibition was reorganised in successive phases.
Today the collection consists mainly of finds from the Italian excavations on Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands: Mycenaean jewellery and vessels from the necropoleis of Ialysos and Kamiros, sculptures of the Classical and Hellenistic periods and Rhodian coins. In the courtyard and the garden, mosaic floors and sculptures are displayed.
