About the museum
Panagia tou Kastrou is located in the Kollakio district of the Medieval City of Rhodes and was probably built in the 11th century. It has been used by all the denominations and religions that passed through the island: from a Byzantine church it was converted into a Gothic three-aisled basilica with a transept when Rhodes came under the Knights Hospitaller, while during Ottoman rule it operated as a mosque under the name “Enderoum Tzami”.
Today the church houses the Byzantine Museum of Rhodes. The collections include portable icons of the late Byzantine and post-Byzantine period, among them double-sided icons of the Hodegetria Virgin from the mid-14th century, as well as fragments of wall paintings, such as those of Saint Zacharias of Chalki from the end of the 14th century.
