About the museum
The Averoff Museum is a museum of modern Greek art and has been operating in Metsovo since August 1988. It was founded by Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas, who wanted to create a small but select gallery in his place of origin. The core of the collection is 200 works by Greek artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, which the founder gathered and donated to the Foundation together with the three-storey building he had constructed specifically for them. The non-profit Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas Foundation, established in 1987, is the body responsible for the museum.
In 1994 the New Wing was added with new exhibition and service spaces; in 1995 the Children’s Workshop began; and in 1997 the Dimitrios Tsamis Hall was inaugurated, with prints and drawings by Greek artists of the period 1920–1960. With a donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, a lift platform, ramps, a lift and a toilet for people with disabilities were built.
The permanent exhibition comprises around 250 works of painting, sculpture and printmaking, including works by Gyzis, Lytras, Volanakis, Iakovidis, Parthenis, Maleas, Moralis and Hatzikyriakou-Gikas. In 2022 the museum received the title of Recognised Museum from the Ministry of Culture.
