About the museum
The Chios Mastic Museum opened in 2016 in the Mastic Villages of southern Chios, the only area in the world where the mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus) is cultivated and the resin mastic is produced. It is housed in a specially built building, on a plot made available by the Unified Cooperative of Mastic Producers, and operates under the responsibility of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) for fifty years from its creation. In 2014 UNESCO included the traditional know-how of mastic cultivation in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The permanent exhibition begins with an introductory section on the mastic tree and mastic. The first section presents the traditional know-how of cultivation, the second how the management of the cultivation shaped the rural landscape and the settlements of southern Chios, and the third the cooperative use and processing of mastic in modern times, with emphasis on the uses that explain its present global presence. Multimedia applications, documentaries, models and original machines in operation complement the experience, while in the outdoor area visitors get to know the plant itself in its natural environment.
