About the museum
The Preveli Monastery is located about 37 km south of Rethymno, on the western slopes of the Megas Potamos, and consists of two complexes 1.7 km apart: the Lower Monastery of the Forerunner (Kato Moni tou Prodromou) in the interior and the seaside Piso Moni of the Theologos, where the seat of the monastery is. The earliest date associated with the monastery is 1594, engraved on a bell. The monastery was linked to the liberation struggles of Crete, in particular with the abbot Melchisedek Tsouderos, and during the occupation it sheltered allied soldiers who fought in the Battle of Crete.
The monastery was an important post-Byzantine centre of church art. Many of its sacred relics, such as sacred vessels, crosses, vestments and gospels, as well as icons, are now displayed in a church museum at Piso Moni. The icons of the katholikon of the Lower Monastery, works by the icon painter Merkourios from Santorini (1841), and its sacred vessels have been moved there.
A large number of icons from the 16th to 20th century survive from Piso Moni, the Lower Monastery and the metochia (dependent estates), with works from the era of the Cretan school of icon painting to the 19th century.
