About the museum
The Sea Museum in Achilleio was founded in 2002 by the then Municipality of Pteleos and has belonged to the Municipality of Almyros since 2010. Its aim is to present to pupils, teachers and visitors the value, beauty and variety of the world of the sea and, through knowledge, to contribute to the protection of the natural environment.
The display cases hold shell collections from the local sea and from the seas of the whole world, as well as marine organisms such as crabs, sea urchins and corals. Texts, drawings and photographs inform about their biology, anatomy and ecology. A special case concerns the relationship between the shell and humans from antiquity to the present, and gives information on the geological evolution of the area.
Of particular interest is the section on sponge fishing, with photographic material, sponges and tools such as the kangava and the skandalopetra, as well as complete diving equipment with a helmet. The museum is a suitable place for environmental education outside school, for organised excursions and for guided tours of school groups.
