About the museum
The Mouseio Typou was founded in 1956 by the Union of Daily Newspaper Editors of Peloponnese, Epirus and the Islands (ESIEPIN), based in Patras, and has operated since 28 May 1957. Its purpose is to collect and preserve newspapers, periodicals, manuscripts and other printed material, mainly of the past.
The collection includes newspapers from 1815 to the present, with more than 1,000 titles from Patras and the rest of Greece, around 1,000 periodicals from 1852 onwards, 67 almanacs from the period 1879–1970 and rare editions. Among the relics of the 1821 Revolution are the original manuscript of the Third National Assembly (Troizina, 1827) and a handwritten letter of Theodoros Kolokotronis.
Part of the material, around 300,000 pages, has been digitised and can be searched online through two catalogues, the “Tekmiria” and the “Entypa”. Readers can also study the sources on the museum’s premises.
