About the museum
The Military Museum of Lachanas is dedicated to the Battle of Kilkis–Lachanas of June 1913, during the Second Balkan War, between the Greek and Bulgarian armies. It is located at the foot of the historic hill of Lachanas and displays souvenirs of the Greek and Bulgarian units that took part in the battle.
Three captured Bulgarian cannons are displayed in the courtyard. Inside there is a large relief map showing the movements of the units and the clashes, Greek and Bulgarian Mannlicher rifles, machine guns, shells, cannons, bayonets and commanders’ swords, Greek military uniforms, and two full-length portraits of Eleftherios Venizelos and of Crown Prince Constantine. Particularly notable is the pierced uniform of Lieutenant Colonel Ioannis Papakyriazis, who was killed in the battle, as well as four paintings by Kenan Mesare, son of the Ottoman commander Hasan Tahsin Pasha, with scenes from the Battle of Lachanas. At the top of the hill there is a monument to the fallen.
