About the museum
Ancient Ypati was the capital of the Ainianes and later, in the 2nd century BC, the seat of the Aetolian League. Its importance was maintained in the Byzantine period, particularly in the years of John I Angelos Doukas Komnenos, at the end of the 13th century.
The castle, that is the acropolis, dominates a steep rock south of the modern settlement. The site was first fortified in the Hellenistic period, and its restoration is attributed to Justinian. The surviving sections belonged to a wider defensive system that extended along the northern slope of the hill and was the last refuge of the defenders of the fortified town in time of war.
The main building phase dates to the 13th century. The surviving circular tower is attributed to the Catalans. The castle played an important role in the events of the Greek War of Independence (1821) and in more recent Greek history.
