About the museum
The Byzantine Museum of Didymoteicho highlights the lesser-known role of Thrace and Didymoteicho in the history of the Byzantine Empire; the town was capital of Byzantium three times. At the same time the exhibition presents the everyday life and customs of the residents in more recent times and emphasises the multicultural character of the region.
The exhibition also tells the story of the ancient city of Plotinoupoli, which was founded by the emperor Trajan on Petra hill. An illuminated map on the floor, showing the Byzantine Via Egnatia in Thrace, works as a knowledge game and invites visitors to interact. Each section is accompanied by informative material, audio information, video projections and interactive applications on the monuments, history and personalities of Didymoteicho and Thrace.
