About the museum
The museum was founded by Pongrátz Gergely, the legendary commander of the Corvin köz, at Marispuszta in Kiskunmajsa. It opened on 14 March 1999 in the two classrooms of the former farm school; the founder himself lived in the teacher’s flat and received visitors in person. After his death his elder brother, Ödön, took over the management of the museum and led it until 2009.
The building was renovated in 2015. The present permanent exhibition was set up from grant funds by the Hadtörténeti Intézet és Múzeum (Military History Institute and Museum) in Budapest, mainly from its own artefacts. It is shown in two larger rooms, the former classrooms, and in two smaller rooms, the rooms of the teacher’s flat.
The exhibition presents the Pongrátz family and the history of the 1956 Revolution, with a memorial room, display cases, interactive devices and a genre scene evoking the Corvin köz. Period flags, weapons, maps, photographs, newspapers and personal objects can also be seen. In the museum’s courtyard stand heavy weapons and a T-55 tank.
