Tabáni Tájház

Szolnok village heritage house showing the home of a Tabán fishing family in the 1930s, on the bank of the Zagyva in one of the city’s oldest districts.

About the museum

Tabán is one of the oldest districts of Szolnok, on the bank of the Zagyva near the Tisza–Zagyva confluence. It developed during the Ottoman occupation, and its residents were mainly fishermen, day labourers and boat loaders. The name is said to derive from Turkish, where it was used for tanners’ workshops and later for the poorer outer quarters of towns.

The village heritage house is housed in a two-room, tile-roofed peasant house from the early 20th century at No. 24 Tabán. After the last owner, the fisherman Kovács Sándor, the derelict house needed a complete renovation, which was carried out in 1989 under the guidance of architects. The ceiling beams of the room have survived in their original state; on the courtyard side of the house runs a gallery with wooden posts.

The kitchen and the room are furnished to show the peasant-bourgeois domestic culture of the 1930s: a kitchen stove with tulip-patterned copper fittings, the tools used to mend fishing nets, a washstand and a pantry section. In the courtyard, a punt and fishing gear (nets, szapoly and szák) are displayed under a covered shed. Tabán was also a favourite subject of painters from the Szolnok artists’ colony, such as Mednyánszky László and Gácsi Mihály. The village heritage house is an exhibition site of the Damjanich János Múzeum.
