About the museum
Szolnok castle stood where the Tisza and the Zagyva meet. According to archaeological excavations, the first fortification was built at the end of the Middle Bronze Age, around 1500 BC, on the eastern part of the castle island. The site became the seat of a castle county in the early Árpád period; after the destruction of the Tatar invasion, from 1550 royal troops began to reinforce it for defence against the Turks. The early-modern palisade castle was destroyed by the flood of 1879. The Várkapu visitor centre was built on the development area of the Szolnok Artists’ Colony and opened in May 2024; the exhibition is based on archaeological finds and archival sources.
