About the museum
At the beginning of the 20th century the lively community life of Arács made a welcoming building necessary. The Népház (community house) in the centre of the district was built in 1914 to plans by Keszler Aladár, with state funding obtained through the Lake Balaton Association (Balatoni Szövetség). During the First World War the local Red Cross set up a military hospital in it; later the first floor housed a school, a doctor’s surgery and a library, and the ground floor a shop.
Since 2010 the renovated building has served the locals as a community space, as originally planned, and also welcomes visitors with its permanent and temporary exhibitions. Exhibition rooms have been opened in the attic converted from the loft.
The collections include the district mineral and rock collection of Schneider Ferenc (supplemented with material from Kutas Árpád and Dr. Cserny Tibor), the hunting trophy collection of Schneider Ferenc, a postal history exhibition selected from the material of the Postamúzeum (Postal Museum) in Budapest, and a local history collection presenting objects related to viticulture. A few pieces of the map collection donated to Balatonfüred by Dr. Cserny Tibor are also on display.
