About the museum
Jókai Mór first visited Balatonfüred in 1857; drawn by the landscape and the atmosphere of the spa, he became a regular guest there together with his wife, Laborfalvy Róza. Ten years later they bought the plot on which the early eclectic-style summer house was built. In the autumn of 1870 it was not yet fully finished, but the couple already took possession of it in the summer. They spent almost twenty summers there, and Jókai wrote his novel Aranyember (The Golden Man) here.
From the terrace above the south veranda there was a view towards Lake Balaton and Tihany. The memorial museum opened in the building in 1954; it was renovated in 2011, and it received the Múzeumi Kávéház-díj (Museum Café Award).
