About the museum
Kőszeg occupies a special place in the history of pharmacy: it is unique in the country in preserving several types of pharmacy. The Arany Egyszarvú Patika presents the memorabilia of both monastic and civic pharmacies. Its foundation is linked to Sztankay Pál, rector of the Jesuit college; the pharmacy, opened in 1743, operated in the Jesuit house on Jurisics tér.
After the Jesuit order was dissolved in 1773, the building came under the administration of the Chamber. In 1775 Svalla Mátyás bought it together with the famous officina furniture, and from 1777 he ran the pharmacy at its present location, at Jurisics tér 11. Under later owners it bore several names. The last owner, Tersánszky Károly, sold it to the Iparművészeti Múzeum (Museum of Applied Arts) in 1910; the pharmacy closed, and for a time a butcher’s shop operated in the building.
After the Second World War the building housed a pharmaceutical-history exhibition of the Vas County Pharmacy Centre; the Kőszeg pharmacy museum seen today opened in October 1980. The highlight of the exhibition is the officina furniture of the former Kőszeg Jesuit pharmacy, made between 1735 and 1744. It is one of the finest works of the Hungarian furniture-making known as Jesuit baroque, and it belongs to the Iparművészeti Múzeum.
