About the museum
The centuries-old house was once owned by the postmaster Samuel Gerhauser. The dilapidated building was renovated in line with heritage-conservation requirements, and a postal-history exhibition opened in the ground-floor rooms. Already in the early modern period an important travel route ran past Kőszeg, so the exhibition’s guiding theme is travel and the transport of post. The first room evokes the history of transport and travel from the 15th to 18th centuries with engravings, a postilion dressed in period costume, and models of a wagon and a diligence. The second room shows the imperial censorship (“cabinet noir”), which operated until the first half of the 19th century, in action.
