About the museum
Cák is one of the founding settlements of the Írottkő Natúrpark (Írottkő Nature Park) and lies on the Kőszeg-hegyalja (Kőszeg foothills). The row of cellars on the Gesztenyés side is a landmark of national renown: at the beginning of the 19th century these thatched, log-walled wine cellars were built from chestnut and oak beams.
The most valuable pieces of the cellars’ furnishings are the presses: of stone-weight (kőhúzós) and side-screw (oldalorsós) construction, painted and carved, the oldest dating from 1778. The single-room buildings with earthen floors have truncated topknot roofs with open gables at the front and hipped roofs at the back. A few cellars are furnished with viticulture and winemaking tools.
The row of cellars can be viewed from outside on any day of the year; the interior spaces of the open-air museum can be visited seasonally, from 1 April to 31 October. The admission ticket includes a guided tour in Hungarian.
