About the museum
The Bányász Emlékház presents the mining history of more than two hundred years of the Dorog coal basin. It was initiated by local collectors, former engineers and miners; the exhibition was prepared under the direction of Solymár Judit, mechanical engineer. The memorial house was inaugurated on 6 September 1983 at the Miners’ Day celebrations.
The building is the only surviving house of the former mining settlement, known as the öregkolónia (old colony). The first streets of the settlement were built between 1892 and 1894, and the rows of houses of the újkolónia (new colony) in 1916. When the housing estate was rebuilt, the old miners’ houses were demolished, but this one was spared. The four-flat house, with a small front terrace, a kitchen and one or two rooms, illustrates well the environment in which miners’ families lived.
The exhibition in three rooms presents old photographs, rocks, tools, instruments, mine rescue equipment, miners’ lamps, maps and old documents authorising mining work; ceremonial uniforms can also be seen. In one of the rooms is the mineral collection of Papp Béla. In the garden of the house stand a piston pump and a braked mine car.
