About the museum
The history of the Rudabánya mining collection goes back to the 1950s: in 1955 the community of the local iron-ore mine set up a local history collection, whose first exhibition opened on 3 September 1956. The Érc- és Ásványbányászati Múzeum (Museum of Ore and Mineral Mining), with a national collecting remit, moved into its own building in 1965. In 2006 it was taken over by the county museum directorate, and in the renovated building the memories of the county’s mining history were displayed. Since 1 January 2013 the Rudabánya Town Council has been the maintaining body, and since then the institution has been called the Bányászattörténeti Múzeum (Mining History Museum).
At the foot of the Rudabánya Hills, Rudabánya is one of Europe’s oldest mining sites: the region’s first inhabitants already used the copper and iron ore that came to the surface in prehistoric times; the heyday of mining fell in the 14th and 15th centuries, and large-scale open-cast iron-ore mining lasted from 1880 to 1985.
The museum’s most important exhibition, which presents the county’s mining history and the development of mining techniques, is in the main building and in the underground exhibition hall built in 1969. The hall illustrates the most common mining methods and, at the end of a 15-metre gallery, a mining workshop. The mineral and palaeontological collection set up in 1980 is displayed in the Földvári Aladár Exhibition Hall, which presents significant Hungarian minerals alongside palaeontological finds from Rudabánya.
