About the museum
The castle was built in 1716 by Jean-François L’Huillier, an officer of Lorraine origin in the Habsburg army. In 1831 Archduke Ferdinand, a member of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, bought the Edelény estate and turned it into an entailed estate (hitbizomány). The Coburgs mainly lived in their castle at Hontszentantal, in what is now Slovakia; they acquired Edelény mainly for economic reasons.
