About the museum
Rudabánya is an internationally known palaeontological site for the find of Rudapithecus hungaricus, more than ten million years old: the skeleton that points to the common ancestor of humans and the living African great apes was found here, on Majomsziget (Monkey Island), in 1965. The Rudapark is a scientific and tourist attraction linked to this site.
The Rudapithecus Visitor Centre on Óvoda utca contains an exhibition, original finds and replicas, films about Rudapithecus, life-size palaeontological sculptures, playful fossil hunting and a sculpture park presenting the animal world of ten million years ago.
The educational trail, viewpoints and jetties around the mine pond can be visited free of charge; the Látványtár (visible storage) on Majomsziget, which presents the excavated layers of the site, is opened only for groups of more than 20 people, by prior registration. The Rudabányai Tájház is free of charge.
