About the museum
The Bátaszéki Tájház (village heritage house) is located in the centre of the town, on Szabadság utca. In the distinguished German peasant house, which suggests material prosperity, the material memories of the three largest population groups living in Bátaszék have been presented since June 2000: those of the Germans settled in the 18th century, of the Hungarians who arrived after the Second World War from Upper Hungary (Felvidék), and of the Székelys who fled from Bukovina.
The four rooms of the main building house an ethnographic collection: the German best room (tiszta szoba) and kitchen, the Székely exhibition, and the furnished room of the people from Upper Hungary, with the furniture, utensils and handwork they brought home with them. During the extension an exhibition on the history of the school and a display of tools from old local crafts (blue-print dyeing (kékfestő), photography, confectionery) were also housed; in the stable and the back courtyard, agricultural machines can be seen.
In the former wine-press house a community room for 50 people has been created, where classes and hospitality events can be held. Since 2005 the cellar has housed an archaeological exhibition assembled from the finds of the Cistercian abbey that once stood in the town; in the shorter cellar, wine-processing and winemaking tools can be seen.
