Bátai Tájház

The protected long house of Báta, built in 1887, presents the life of the Catholic peasantry, who grew prosperous after the regulation of the Danube.

About the museum

The Bátai Tájház (village heritage house) preserves the architectural values typical of the village: a long house in comb-type development, with a ridge perpendicular to the street and a saddle roof, whose farmstead contains all the farm buildings needed for peasant farming. The house, built in 1887, was built by the smallholder Somogyi Mihály; his descendants owned it until 2001. The residential building and its outbuildings (granary, barn, stable, wine-press house, coach house, góré (corn crib)) were declared listed monuments in 2011.

The village heritage house preserves the material memories of the farming and peasant life that changed after the regulation of the Danube. It presents the residential house with its complete furnishings, and the farm buildings and the work tools needed for animal husbandry, arable farming and viticulture in their original places.

The most valuable material is the textile collection: the full range of the costumes of the Catholic and Reformed population of Báta, household textiles, woven fabrics, embroideries and laces. The memorabilia linked to church life and folk religious practice are also rich. The craft workshop set up in the granary offers space for today’s tradition-keeping; here is also the exhibition of decorated eggs (hímes tojás).
