About the museum
The “Hermit of Bihar”, Bessenyei György, was born in Tiszabercel in 1746 (or 1747), and was the most significant figure of the first phase of the Hungarian Enlightenment: poet, playwright, translator, philosopher and politician. In 1787, to escape family quarrels, he moved to Pusztakovácsi, today's Bakonszeg; in 1790 he became a táblabíró (local magistrate) of Bihar County and then lived as a hermit.
The Bessenyei Memorial House opened in 1965 and is still visited by many people. The exhibition presents the life and work of the poet. The garden is decorated with a bust of Bessenyei by Kurucz Imre; the garden has been declared protected, and the property a nature conservation area.
