About the museum

Local-history collecting in Berettyóújfalu began in the late 1950s, with the participation of enthusiastic teachers and local patriots. On 20 August 1960 the Néprajzi ház (Ethnographic House), the predecessor of the Bihari Múzeum, opened in Bercsényi utca; the house, built in the mid-18th century, was furnished with period furniture. After the house was demolished, collecting continued, and a quarter of a century later the museum moved out of the outgrown family house to the centre of Berettyóújfalu, to the upper floor of the former village hall.

After the move in 2001, the first part of the permanent exhibition, the archaeological and local-history unit, opened in May 2003. On 17 October 2004, the museum’s 30th birthday, the ethnographic hall, a literary-history exhibition and a toy-history exhibition were also completed. In 2013 the museum came under the maintenance of the Municipality of Berettyóújfalu, and from 1 February 2016 it has been a member institution (tagintézmény) of the Berettyó Cultural Centre.

Between 2020 and 2021 the museum renewed its exhibition units: the ethnographic, Sárrét, literary-history and local-history rooms, and presents the history of the Bihar landscape and the Bihar people with a striking, interactive permanent exhibition. In 2004 and 2011 the museum won a special prize in the Museum of the Year competition, in 2012 it received a professional special prize, and in 2015 it won the title Museum of the Year 2014.
