About the museum
The Nagykereki castle is one of the most famous listed monuments of Hajdú-Bihar County, built in the 12th–13th centuries. Its owners included János Corvin, the Ártándy family and István Báthory, Prince of Transylvania. István Bocskai had it converted into a fortress in the Renaissance style, surrounded by a wall and a moat; after repelling the imperial siege of 1604, he raised Nagykereki to the rank of market town. The castle, severely damaged in the Ottoman siege, was rebuilt as a Baroque mansion in the 18th century; it has been a listed monument since 1953 and was restored between 1959 and 1962. In the mansion, the history of the castle, István Bocskai and the role of the hajdú soldiers are presented on display boards and period engravings; events are also held in the ballroom, and in the French-style garden stands the Bocskai bust by Pátzay Pál.
