About the museum

The main activity of the Deák Gyűjtemény is caring for and presenting the collection of Deák Dénes (1931–1993), a Budapest art collector. The collection covers progressive 20th-century Hungarian art; a large part of it presents Hungarian painting from the 1900s to around 1960. Its spirit is closest to that of the Modern Magyar Képtár in Pécs.

The building that houses the collection was formed by joining houses built in different periods. In one room, a wall painting dating from around 1770, a secco, which covers almost the entire wall, has been uncovered and is presented. The gallery is an exhibition venue of the Szent István Király Múzeum.

The house also hosts temporary exhibitions, mainly introducing the oeuvre of artists important to the collection, in cooperation with other museums and private collectors. On the walls of the first-floor museum education studio, exhibitions of pupils' work are regularly held; these are known as the Diák-Deák Galéria.
