About the museum

The material of the Székesfehérvár diocesan museum consists of goldsmith objects, liturgical textiles, religious paintings and sculptures that have remained in the cathedral and the bishop’s palace, including folk religious memorabilia. The material of the bishopric and of the churches of the diocese can be seen together here. The core collection has been presented in renewed form since the summer of 2009; its most valuable piece is the reliquary of King Saint Stephen.

From the beginnings of the Hungarian state, Székesfehérvár was a coronation and burial site and a major sacred centre. The museum’s newer exhibition, “A szentek titka” (“The Secret of the Saints”), presents the lives of nearly forty saints, blesseds and venerable persons through paintings, sculptures, films, photographs and multimedia installations. The Prohászka Ottokár Memorial Room presents the bishop’s social, scientific and ecclesiastical work with period documents and enlarged photographs.
