About the museum
In the mid-1750s the town of Kőszeg had the Stájer-házak (Styrian Houses) built for forester families who had settled from Styria, because the nearly three thousand hectares of forest it had received from the treasury had to be managed professionally even then. Today the Szombathelyi Erdészeti Zrt. (Szombathely Forestry Company) operates the forestry museum, the forest school and the forest guesthouse in the houses. The exhibition describes the mountains’ rocks, flora and fauna, the history of forest and game management and its famous researchers.
