About the museum

The history of the gallery in Balassagyarmat began in 1974, when the town’s leadership, with the help of a few specialists of local origin, created the basis of the collection. Purchases of works were made possible by a gift from the Műcsarnok (Art Hall) and by an art-object tax set aside after municipal investments. The first permanent exhibition opened on 20 August 1975 in four rooms of the Vármegyeháza (County Hall), with 62 works. Three years later the show was put into storage, and only after the change of regime could it reopen in the former casino building, where the sculptor Csemniczky Zoltán arranged the second permanent exhibition.

Thanks mainly to donations, the collection has since grown to 402 works. The present permanent exhibition spans 1913 to 2020: from art deco through novecento and gestural painting to the New Eclecticism, it presents the major periods of Hungarian fine art. This historical arc also includes artists with local ties, such as Jánossy Ferenc, Zórád Ernő, Szabó Vladimír, Csemniczky Zoltán, Réti Zoltán and members of the Telek family.
