About the museum
The local history collection of the Madách Imre Városi Könyvtár (Madách Imre Municipal Library) has operated since 1977 in one of the listed manor houses of Balassagyarmat. The building was erected in the early 19th century in classicist style, with a shingled roof; after its last owner it is also called the Csillagház (Star House). The local heritage society Balassagyarmati Honismereti Kör also holds its events in the building.
The collection preserves books, documents, local newspapers, photographs and postcards on the history, geography, and economic and cultural life of the town and its micro-region. Among the permanent exhibitions, the Horváth Endre memorial exhibition presents the life and career of the graphic artist and banknote designer who took his school-leaving examination in Balassagyarmat.
In the Madách Room, watercolours and drawings by ifjabb Balogh Károly, nephew of Madách Imre, the namesake of the library, can be seen. The pharmacy history exhibition was created in 1999 and presents the 20th-century furnishings and documents of the Magyar Korona Pharmacy.
