About the museum

The Csillagvizsgáló és Tudományos Élményközpont (Observatory and Science Experience Centre) is located in building “A” of the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University, in the Líceum of Eger. The tower, which preserves the old astronomical traditions, extends from the third to the ninth floor with more than three hundred steps; the venue operates today as a museum, and actual astronomical observation is not possible.

The basic programme leads from the reception hall on the third floor to the camera obscura on the ninth floor. On the fifth floor the Barna György optics history exhibition can be seen: a significant part of the private collection of a collector from Diósgyőr presents magnifiers, microscopes, medical instruments, cameras, film projectors and telescopes from 1798 to 1984, complemented by the cameras of Borbás László. On the sixth floor are the science playroom and the Hell Miksa Observatory, and on the eighth floor the panorama terrace; on the third floor the Jedlik Ányos Experimentárium awaits visitors with experiments.

Visitors can also take part in planetarium shows and special lessons, and school groups are offered museum education sessions.
