About the museum

Lenkey János was born in Eger in 1807. He served in the Austrian army; in 1848, leaving his Galician unit, he joined the Hungarian revolution, and in 1849 he became a general. After the surrender at Világos he was brought before a court, but was not executed because of his mental decline; he died in February 1850 in the fortress prison at Arad. His remains were brought home to Eger in 1936 and buried in the Kisasszony cemetery. The Szabadság Háza (House of Freedom) opened in the renovated birth house on 1 March 2024.
