About the museum
The Eger Sportmúzeum has operated since 1993 in the former county prison building. It was founded by Dr. Székely Ferenc, who collected this unique collection until his death; it presents local, Hungarian and world sports history over three floors in twelve rooms.
The two-storey prison building was built to plans by Gerl József between 1761 and 1765, with a Roman Catholic chapel at its centre. The third-floor extension, which houses the Lutheran chapel, dates from 1838–39. The former chapels now hold memorabilia of Olympians and of Eger’s water sports.
The exhibition includes, for example, the medal from the first modern Olympic Games, Olympic costumes, cups and medals, Puskás’s ball, flags from 1956, and the equipment of famous kayakers and boxers. Interactive games, such as the table football, a video game and a basketball hoop, entertain children as well. In the ground-floor teaching room, unconventional PE lessons and popular science lectures are held.
