About the museum
The building of the Csók István Képtár (István Csók Gallery) was built between 1940 and 1942 to designs by Schmidl Ferenc, in a style combining Novecento and Scandinavian influences. The town had it built to give a worthy home to Aba-Novák Vilmos’s monumental mural series Magyar–francia történelmi kapcsolatok (Hungarian–French Historical Relations), which won the Grand Prix at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. The main hall was adapted to the size of the murals, but by the time the building was finished the pictures could no longer be placed in their planned positions; the dismantled murals were stored in crates for years and were restored for 20 August 2001.
In 1954 the town council handed over the previously unused cultural house for museum purposes. The gallery was opened on 27 March 1955 and was named after the painter Csók István, born in Fejér County, who attended the opening. The first exhibition, organised by the Szépművészeti Múzeum (Museum of Fine Arts), presented the history of Hungarian painting from the early 19th century to the 1950s. The gallery is an exhibition venue of the Szent István Király Múzeum.
