About the museum
The Fekete Sas Patika (Black Eagle Pharmacy) ceased to operate as a pharmacy in 1971. After the building and its furnishings had been professionally restored, it opened as a museum in 1975. The first pharmacist settled in Székesfehérvár in 1688, shortly after the Ottomans had been driven out. In 1745 the Jesuits bought the pharmacy, which after the dissolution of the order in 1774 came into the possession of Valter Ferenc from Pozsony.
Valter moved the pharmacy to Fő utca 5 and named it Fekete Sas, in German Apotheke zum Schwarzen Adler. Later the pharmacy was owned by Braun Ferenc and, from the early 20th century, by the Lukáts family, until nationalisation in the 1950s. The old equipment could no longer cope with the increased traffic, so the pharmacy closed in 1971.
The museum is on the ground floor of the two-storey, classicising Baroque residential house. In the officina (dispensary) are Jesuit-era painted and carved oak cabinets, wooden pots, the large tincture press, the copper mortar inscribed with the date 1752, and later vessels, glass jars and scales. The many original objects illustrate more than two hundred years of the pharmacy.
