About the museum
Eger Castle began to be built up after the Mongol invasion in the 13th century, and was developed into a significant fortress by the bishopric and later by the castle captains. It owes its fame to the siege of 1552, when under the command of Captain Dobó István the defenders held out for weeks against the Ottoman army, which far outnumbered them.
The castle fell into Ottoman hands in 1596, was retaken by Habsburg troops in 1687 and demolished in 1702. In the 20th century the ruined fortress became a memorial site open to visitors, following archaeological excavations and restorations; the Dobó István Vármúzeum is housed here.
The museum's permanent exhibitions present the history of the castle, the siege, the memory of the heroes, the casemates and the prison. The museum is extended by a few external sites (Gárdonyi Géza Emlékház, Lenkey-ház and Ziffer Sándor Galéria).
