About the museum
The Valide Sultan Hamam (meaning: the Sultan's Mother) steam bath was built in the early 17th century, not long after Eger fell into Ottoman hands in 1596. The Ottoman traveller Evlia Cselebi visited Eger in 1664, and in his travelogue he mentions the bath, standing under the gate of the inner castle at the end of the bridge, with six chambers and a dome covered in red ceramic tiles.
The building belongs to the type of Turkish steam baths; similar ones can be found from Pécs to Istanbul in the former territory of the Ottoman Empire. After Eger was recaptured in 1687, it was first used as a granary and then as a bell foundry; by the second half of the 18th century only its remains stood.
Research on the ruins began in 1958, and the conservation of the building complex took place in 2013. As a member institution of the Dobó István Vármúzeum (Dobó István Castle Museum), an exhibition operates here, supplemented with new panels and an animated film to give a more detailed picture of the bathing culture of the period.
