About the museum
The Emlékház is housed in the writer’s former home, where Gárdonyi Géza lived from 1897 to 1922. The writer, poet, playwright and journalist moved to Eger at the end of the 19th century and within a few years created a welcoming home for himself. Together with his mother he bought the dilapidated house, had it carefully rebuilt, and turned the garden into a shady grove in which he planted some protected plants and trees himself.
Almost all of the furniture in the house has remained in its original place, and the walls of the rooms keep their original colours and patterns. On show are the writer’s carved writing desk and bookcase, the study and the bedroom, a library of nearly ten thousand volumes, handwritten entries, paintings and cipher notes. He had a window cut above his desk so that light would fall on the text he was working on.
Gárdonyi wrote several of his novels here, including Egri csillagok (Stars of Eger), completed in 1901, which tells of the struggles against the Ottomans in the 16th century. A special item in the study is the pipe cabinet (pipatórium), where the writer kept his pipes and the tobacco he received from friends. The museum is a branch of the Dobó István Vármúzeum (Dobó István Castle Museum).
