About the museum
The nature conservation area is located on Kálvária Hill in Tata and has operated since 1953 as a protected geological nature area covering 3.5 hectares. It opened to the natural science-minded public in 1976 because of its geological and botanical sights, unrivalled in Europe. Since 1991 the area has also operated as an Open-Air Geological Museum, where the most common mountain-building rocks of Hungary can be found.
Mining the rocks of the hill began some five thousand years ago, in the Copper Age. The disused stone quarries and the rock surfaces cleared for research and teaching purposes form the main sights of the Geology Garden; alongside them, planted vegetation with rare species can be seen. The area has been managed by Eötvös Loránd University since 1994. The guided walk of about fifty minutes presents documents of almost one hundred million years of earth history. The Baroque chapel and the Calvary are the outstanding sights of Tata's cultural history.
