About the museum
The history of Tata Castle begins in the 14th century: the first manor house is attributed to the palatine Lackfi István. Luxemburgi Zsigmond acquired Tata in 1397, and by 1409 the first royal palace had been built. Hunyadi Mátyás regained the castle in 1472 and had it converted into a Renaissance palace.
After the Battle of Mohács the castle became part of the frontier fortress system of the Ottoman period; its bastions were designed in the 16th century by Italian military engineers. Later alterations include the knights’ hall created in 1815 and the neo-Romanesque windows made in 1897.
The museum has operated in the building since 1954; excavations and restoration took place between 1964 and 1973. The permanent exhibitions present the birth of the town, everyday life in the Middle Ages, the medieval and Roman stone collections, the knights’ hall and the Roman room.
