About the museum
The kocsi is a Hungarian invention and originates from the village of Kocs. In the reign of King Mátyás, the wheelwrights of Kocs were very famous; Sigmund von Herberstein described the kocsi carriage in detail in 1518, and mentioned that King Mátyás also liked to travel in this fast and comfortable vehicle. The construction was sprung; in the body was a wickerwork basket that rose gradually higher towards the rear, so that it could be covered with a tarpaulin when needed. The novelty of the invention is shown by the fact that the word kocsi appears with the same meaning in several European languages.
The museum commemorates this famous vehicle. Following the stages of the kocsi's manufacture, the exhibition describes the tool sets of wheelwrights and blacksmiths, refers to the makers of the harness used for teams, the saddlers, and presents a size- and material-faithful reconstruction of a 15th-century kocsi. On request, playful, experiential sessions are also organised.
