About the museum
The Vértesszőlős presentation site is a branch of the Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum). It presents Hungary’s oldest archaeological site, around 400,000 years old, in a former stone quarry. The open-air exhibition presents archaeological, anthropological and palaeontological finds and their natural environment.
At the two excavated and presented sites, millions of stone tools, a hearth containing burnt bones, bones of hunted animals, human milk teeth and an occipital bone have been found. The finds are associated with early humans of the Heidelberg type. Leaf and plant imprints from the quarry, and animal tracks from a former muddy watering place, evoke the environment. A family activity booklet also belongs to the presentation site.
