About the museum
The museum is located in the former Esterházy Palace, in the medieval inner town of Sopron, near the Fő tér (Main Square). Its predecessor was the Bányászati Tanintézet (Mining Institute), founded in 1735 in Selmecbánya, later the Academy of Mining and Forestry, which was the cradle of many student traditions that live on today. The institution is maintained by the Faculty of Forestry Engineering of the university.
The permanent exhibitions are the Hidvégi Béla Hunting Collection, the interactive exhibition “Nemzeti kincsünk: az Erdő” (“Our National Treasure: the Forest”) and the Alma Mater memorial room. The latter presents the most important elements of the Selmec student traditions, uniforms and objects.
