About the museum

The museum preserves the treasures of the Evangelical congregation of Sopron from the 17th century to the present day. Sopron was among the Hungarian towns where the Reformation appeared among the first, and the community has a history of almost five hundred years.

Most of the collection dates from the period after the fire of 1676: partly foreign and partly Hungarian works, as well as the liturgical objects of the church. The faithful tried to make up for the losses they had suffered with donations. To present these, the permanent exhibition “A soproni evangélikus gyülekezet évszázadai” (Centuries of the Evangelical Congregation of Sopron) opened in 1986, in which communion vessels, flagons, a ciborium, candlesticks and altar cloths, as well as paintings, documents, books and printed matter can be seen. The museum works together with the archive and library of the parish.
