About the museum
Sopron has a centuries-old tradition of valuing antiquities. Around 1548 the military physician Lazius Wolfgang already drew the town leaders’ attention to the Roman finds that came to light. The congress of physicians and natural scientists held in Sopron in 1847 had a nationwide effect on the collecting of antiquities, and in the 1860s the earthworks for the gasworks’ pipelines unearthed so many Roman finds that a citizens’ movement to found a town museum began.
The Soproni Történeti és Művészeti Egylet (Sopron Historical and Art Society), founded in 1867, announced a donation drive for the museum in 1868; the museum’s custodian became Storno Ferenc. The collection was placed on the first floor of the Höller-ház (Höller House) and later merged with the collection of the Sopron County Archaeological Society (1896). In early 1908 the Lenck Villa on Deák tér was purchased, and for a long time it was the museum’s seat.
Today’s Múzeumnegyed (Museum Quarter) was created on Fő tér, in the heart of the old town, by connecting four listed buildings: the Storno House, the General’s House (Tábornok-ház), the Fabricius House and the Fire Tower (Tűztorony). Alongside the traditional exhibitions presenting the history of Sopron from prehistory to the present, new displays have opened, including the archaeological exhibition “Sopron örök!” (Sopron Forever!), which opened in 2024. The other exhibition sites of the Soproni Múzeum are the Lenck Villa, the Központi Bányászati Múzeum (Central Mining Museum), the Macskakő Gyermekmúzeum (Cobblestone Children’s Museum), the Ó-zsinagóga (Old Synagogue) and other locations in Sopron.
