About the museum
The Ó-zsinagóga (Old Synagogue) stands on Új utca, which despite its name is one of the oldest streets in Sopron; it was originally called Zsidó utca (Jewish Street), because Jewish families settled here around 1300. The medieval synagogue was built at the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century; it served as a prayer house, assembly hall and school at once, and is almost unique in Central Europe. Next to it stood a hospice offering lodging to travellers, and the ritual bath that can still be visited today.
In 1526 the people of Sopron expelled the Jewish population; the synagogue fell into decline and was converted into a residential house. Its remains were uncovered again during research in 1967, when the building regained its former splendour. Today it is visited as an exhibition site of the Soproni Múzeum (Sopron Museum).
